About Me

Catherine Tansley is a Certified Canadian Counsellor based in Newfoundland and Labrador. In private practice since 2020, she has been engaged in mental health services for more than five years with experience from the Family Life Bureau (now Ruah Counselling Centre) and the Newfoundland and Labrador Sexual Assault Crisis Centre. Her Master’s degree in counselling psychology, supplemented by ongoing specialized training, is augmented by 20 years of work as an educator. Catherine is most recently embracing her role as guidance counsellor in the public school system.

Education and Training

Catherine holds a Master of Education in Counselling Psychology from Memorial University of Newfoundland and is certified by the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association . Other related trainings include Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training, Autism Spectrum Disorder and Behavioural Interventions, Anxiety Coaching, Narrative therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Dialectial Behaviour Therapy. With the Mental Health Academy, she has completed courses on anxiety, depression, and techniques for counselling children. She has also attended workshops on addictions, and abortion recovery. More recently she has completed training in Eating disorder sensitivity training and chronic screen use approaches.

In addition to her counselling background, Catherine holds a Bachelor of Music and Music Education from Memorial University of Newfoundland.

Life and Work Experience

Prior to opening her private practice, She volunteered for five years with the Newfoundland and Labrador Sexual Assault Crisis Centre, providing support services to both male and female clients. In a counseling psychology internship at the Family Life Bureau, she co-facilitated group sessions on anger management, separation and divorce.

Having worked as a teacher in Newfoundland and Labrador for more than 19 years, she has gained significant experience working with individuals from a range of cultural backgrounds, of varying ages, behaviours, and cognitive profiles. In 2021, She was awarded the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador Minister of Education’s Award for Compassion in Teaching for her work as a Music Teacher and Guidance Counsellor.

Social Engagement

Catherine is a professional and volunteer musician, a previous member of the Lady Cove Women’s Choir and principal Tuba player with the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra. She has conducted a number of choirs and musical ensembles, such as the Newfoundland Symphony Youth Choir, the Newfoundland Symphony Youth Orchestra, as well as church-based choirs and musical groups. She believes that her musicianship has enabled her to build relationships with individuals, communities, and across cultural and geographic distances.

Fees

One-hour session - $150 (tax included)

The last 10 minutes of each session is used to schedule the next appointment, to collect payment and to update file notes.

Sliding scale options are also available upon request.

Report writing rates available upon request.

Payment

Payment is required at end of appointment and can be made by:

All major credit cards or EMT.

Insurance

Services are covered under many health insurance plans and my services can be used under counselling/psychotherapy or naturopath coverage.

Clients pay for sessions and are sent a receipt that can be shared with insurance providers, as I do not offer direct billing.

Cancelation fees

If you cannot keep your appointment, a notice of a minimum of 48 hours is required. If notice is given between 24- 48 hours, a cancellation fee of 50% is charged to your account. If you fail to attend your appointment or give less than 24 hour notice, your account is charged for a full session fee and is due before your next scheduled appointment.
